Health Unit Coordinator

Synopsis

This position may be referred to as Unit Clerk, Ward Clerk, or Unit Secretary. The Health Unit Coordinator is a member of the nursing team who works under the supervision of registered nursing staff. They can serve as receptionists on patient floors, and as such, must have a pleasant and professional demeanor in dealing with the public. Typical job responsibilities include maintaining patient charts, preparing special reports (birth/death certificates), completing admission and discharge forms, graphing pulse, temperature, and blood pressure readings of patients, and communicating with the dietary department. The person holding this position must be able to communicate well with co-workers, patients and the public. Another important characteristic is the ability to follow instructions and procedures. The work of the unit clerk must be accurate, dependable and prompt.

Training Requirements

Community colleges may offer this training through the continuing education department. Some hospitals offer an on-the-job training program for this position. Others employ only those with previous Unit Clerk experience or those who have completed a formal course of study. Contact the Human Resource Department of area hospitals for information.
