How to Apply for Financial Aid
Obtaining financial aid is more than just meeting
eligibility requirements. The applications you
submit can make or break your chances for an award.
They must be clear, accurate and convincing! This
section provides basic guidelines to apply for
financial assistance. Contact your counselor and/or
college financial aid office for additional information
and opportunities.
Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
The first step is to submit a federal FAFSA form.
The FAFSA calculates your family's ability to
contribute toward your educational costs. Note
that many financial aid providers require a copy
of your FAFSA results as part of their application
process, so you need to complete a FAFSA whether
you think you qualify for federal aid or not!

Plan Ahead
- Request applications early. (Sample
Request Form)
- Carefully review materials you receive. Be sure
you understand the eligibility requirements and
terms. Be realistic and do not apply if you do
not meet the qualifications.
- Make check list of what is required to apply
for the award and create a timeline for "on-time" application.
Application Form
- Read and follow instructions carefully
- Type or print clearly
- Do not leave anything blank
- Answer should be clear, concise and realistic.
Stick to given space limitations - more is not
always better.
- If requested, present a budget that is as thorough
and specific as possible. Make sure it adds up
correctly.
References
- A reference is an evaluation of your ability and
potential. Choose people who know you well enough
to write meaningful recommendations. Do not use
family members.
- Give references adequate information about the
award you are applying for and what you intend
to do with the degree you are seeking.
- Letters of reference should be typed, dated, and
signed. Professional references should be on company
letterhead and include originator's title.
Before You Mail It
- Proofread the entire application.
- Check all forms for required signatures.
- Make sure your name is on every attachment.
- Keep a copy of everything.
If you are awarded . . . Reply immediately! Showing
your appreciation may improve your chances of another
award next year.
